Dental Fillings

Mountain View Dental is dedicated to providing high-end and affordable dental care to everyone in Alamogordo, New Mexico, and any surrounding areas. One of the most common restorative dental procedures is the dental filling used to fix minor to major tooth damage.

When to Get a Filling

Usually, a filling is recommended when decay or a cavity has infected your tooth or it has a crack in it. Unfortunately, when a cavity or damage has occurred on your tooth it can’t repair itself. Dental fillings are used to replace the decayed part of your tooth and restore it to its original shape

If you are feeling constant sensitivity in a specific tooth, there is a high possibility that there could be decay. It is important to go to your dentist and get an exam right away so if there is decay, they can stop it from getting any bigger and creating more damage.

Process of a Filling

Depending on the amount of decay, a filling is a quick and easy procedure that can be completed in one visit. After the decay has been removed from your tooth, it is then cleaned and prepped for the material to be placed.

If a patient is receiving a composite resin filling, the material will be custom to the color of your teeth, so that it's a perfect match. After the resin has been placed, it is then cured with a special light to harden the material to act as the new enamel. To finish the process, the tooth is then shaped and smoothed so that it matches the original tooth.

If your tooth is damaged or cracked or there is a possibility that you could have decay, it is important to get diagnosed by a dentist and to receive a filling. Without getting a decay diagnosed and receiving a filling, decay can increase and cause permanent damage.
